San Martino di Castrozza is located right next to the Pale di San Martino, the longest Dolomites’ group, and it is at 1.450 m above sea level.

S. Martino di Castrozza is surrounded by the Wildlife Park Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino, one of the first wildlife park in Italy, where the pink rock faces of the Dolomites oppose to the dark rocks of the Lagorai full of glacial lakes. Poets and musicians such as Arthur Schnitzler and Richard Strauss have been inspired by this territory and its beauties.
The Pale di San Martino’s peaks right above the village, the thick woods, the wide meadows have made San Martino di Castrozza a charming touristic destination since the nineteenth century.
From the village it is possible to see many Dolomites peaks: Cimon della Pala, Vezzana, Rosetta, Sass Maor, Val di Roda’s peaks, Cima della Madonna, one one side; Cavallazza, Colbricon’s peaks in porphyry and the small Colbriccon, on the other side.
San Martino di Castrozza’s history
San Martino was originally the place of the Hospice of the Saints Martino and Giuliano, an antique religious institution which hosted travellers who were going through the Passo Rolle, walking from Primiero to Val di Fiemme, or vice-versa.
The curch and the romanic bell tower are the only traces of that old monastery and they gives evidence of its origins, still nowadays.

It is also possible to do trekking, nordic walking, mountain bike, climbing, freeclimbing, canoeing, paragliding and horse riding. In particular, there is a program called “Legendary Trekking”, which offers 200km of trails and paths.
For people who love fishing, there are many rivers or lakes, full of trouts and many other fishes.
Children and teens can enjoy themselves in the wood, climbing trees in a new park called Agility Forest, equiped with ropes and snaplinks.

Close to San Martino it is located the “Natural Biotope Prà delle Nasse”, a protected area visited by many tourists with guides especially during the summer. In San Martino you can also find art and antiques’ galleries, handcrafts or gastronomic shops, wine shops and liquor store.

The particolar location of San Martino di Castrozza (right on the border between Trentino and Veneto) has influenced its gastronomy, too. Taste the traditional meals, belonging to Primiero's tradition, in the many restaurants, mountain huts or "agriturismi" that can be found in San Martino di Castrozza and in the nearby villages
Tipical dishes in this territory are smoked cold cuts, honey, berries, and cheese such as “Tosèla”, “Nostrano Stagionato” and “Ricotta Affumicata”.
Winter sports in San Martino di Castrozza

During a winter holiday in San Martino di Castrozza you'll have the chance to practice many sports: snow sports such as ski, snowboard and cross-country ski and ice sports such as hockey and ice-skating.

The lifts are just outside the town’s center and they are easily reachable using the ski-bus service: Ces, Tognola and Colverde are at just at the edge of San Martino di Castrozza while Rolle ski area is higher and with a longer opening period (from novembre to late april).
60 are the kilometers of slopes of the three ski areas in San Martino di Castrozza and most of them lies inside the Paneveggio Natural Park. There are different levels slopes: some for experts and some for beginners.
The biggest ski area, from “Alpe Tognola” to “Malga Ces”, offers 45 km of ski slopes from 2357 to 1404 m above sea level and it can be reached with Tognola Cable Car (on the main road 1 kilometers far from San Martino) or using Ces chair lift on the west side of the town. Thanks to different sun exposure slopes are in perfect conditions from the early morning to late afternoon.
In the "Alpe Tognola" ski area there is also a snowpark for boarders.
The other ski area is called “Colverde” and it is reachable by cablecar. There are 2 really long slopes from the very top down to the town passing below the Pale. In summertime these lifts are open letting everyone reach easilly the high top and have thrilling views over the Dolomites and the valleys.
In the Rolle ski area (8 km far from San Martino) there are 6 lifts and 15 km of slopes with a good snow coverage because they are around 2000m above sea level. Different level slopes will satisfy everyone and snowboarders will enjoy the "Rolle Rails Park" in the "Castellazzo" slope.
Cross country skiing in Prà delle Nasse
Cross country ski trails are just outsite San Martino di Castrozza in "Prà delle Nasse". There are 3 trails for 9 kilometers in an astonishing landscape. The easiest and medium trails are in the plain area, while the third trails, the hardest, goes into the fir wood beyond the Valcigolera river.
In Prà delle Nasse there is also the ski school field that can be reached eaily with the skibus service. It is the ideal place for beginners and expecially for children. There are 2 wide slopes, served by a double ski-lift, and a playing area reserved only for children with ski-games, tunnels, and shapes of cartoons main characters to help children to feel more confident with skis on.
